REGATTA BARCOLANA; The Barcolana is taking place on the second Sunday of October every year since 1969 in the Gulf of Trieste. It is one of the most crowded regattas in the world. It became the Guinness World Record holder in 2019 with its 2,689 boats and over 16,000 sailors on the starting line.
SLOVENIAN COAST; Slovenians are proud of its 46.6 km long coast, from Ankaran to Sečovlje. In Europe, only Bosnia and Herzegovina and Monaco have a shorter coastline. The Slovenian coast is the seventh shortest coast in the world.
ISTRIA; The Romans described the Istrian people as fierce pirates, protected by the difficult navigation of their rocky coasts. Nowadays the land of good food, wine, olive oil and truffles.
THE WINDS ON SLOVENIAN COAST
MISTRAL: (WNW) is a typical summer wind of the Adriatic, with it the good weather starts. It is a thermal wind that blows from the sea to the land during the day due to a change in temperature. It starts blowing in the morning and stops at sunset.
BURIN: (ENE) the reverse of Maestral is his brother Burin, the Night Thermal Wind. It blows from the land towards the sea and is formed because the land cools faster than the sea after sunset. It blows from sunset to sunrise.

SIROCCO: (SE) occurs when there is an area of high pressure over the eastern Mediterranean, and an area of low pressure over Europe. The Mediterranean air masses begin to turn counter-clockwise, which shows up as a southerly wind here. It is warm, humid and has a constant wind, often accompanied by precipitation. It makes long, high and constant waves at sea. Combined with the full moon, it causes flooding of coastal cities in the north.
TRAMONTANE: (N) is a stormy wind that mainly occurs in the warmer months of the year and is formed by the penetration of a cold air mass from the north. Tramontane forms quickly, with a particularly strong and cold northerly wind, which in gusts can exceed 50 knots, and lasts about 1 hour. The wave is short and choppy, the sea very foamy. Because it appears very quickly, it is dangerous for inexperienced and careless sailors!
LIBECCIO: (SW) is a stormy wind accompanied by heavy precipitation. It starts to blow when an anticyclone appears south of the Adriatic, while at the same time a strong cyclone approaches from the north. That’s when the south wind starts blowing on the Adriatic. Due to the movement of the cyclone along the Adriatic, after a while the wind suddenly changes its direction to the east and reaches storm force. It causes lots of troubles to the Slovenian coast.
